Upcoming Limo Changes
Limousines come in so many different shapes and sizes that it is often hard for the industry bodies to keep up with the changes and make sure that the laws and rules governing limousines, passengers and regulations are fair and accessible for everyone.
Therefore, the National Limousine and Chauffeur Association in the UK has set out new guidelines clarifying the laws and how they relate to everyone. These outlines include the current laws and the upcoming changes which will be seen at the end of 2007.
For example, until the end of 2007 it is still legal for a limousine to be offered for hire under a written contract. Also, the end of 2007 will see the need for every limousine working for hire and reward to be fully licensed.
The passenger restrictions will not be changing any time soon and still continue to state that limousines hired for reward will only be allow to carry eight passengers, regardless of their size, or the number of seats. However, a vehicle which has achieved its Certificate of Initial Fitness (COIF) will be allowed to carry the number of passengers stated on the vehicle’s plate.
SUV limousines operated with full licensing may carry their designated number of passengers under a private hire contract. This means that they are hired out as a vehicle only, and the chauffeur must come from an independent source. Offering the vehicle for hire by itself means it is not restricted by the limousine passenger laws as without a chauffeur offered in the hire, it is not being hired for reward.
Limousines registered and operating within London must be licensed by the Public Carriage Office as they must meet different guidelines to the vehicles in the rest of the country. Limousines entering London from another part of the country must only comply with the laws of the region they are coming from and not the laws regarding limousines operating from London.
